Garage Door Track Repair

Scraping, squealing or off the rails. Serving Great Falls, Potomac Falls, Lowes Island, Cascades.

The two steel tracks guide the rollers on every trip. They need to be parallel, plumb and firmly bolted to the jamb. A car bumper, a stray bike or years of vibration can bend one, and the door then binds, scrapes or jumps out of the track altogether.

A door that has come off its track hangs by one side and can fall if anyone tries to lift it. We start by supporting it, then check the rollers, the cables and the panels for damage. Where a track is only twisted we straighten it; where it is creased, we replace it. Track work starts from $150 per door, and a door that has also lost a roller or two is quoted on site.

Off-track doors usually involve a cable problem as well, which is why we look at both.

Signs You Need Garage Door Track Repair

  • The door scrapes or squeals against the track.
  • A roller has popped out and the door tilts.
  • The track bolts have loosened and the track moves when the door runs.
  • A visible crease or dent in the vertical track.
  • The door jams a few feet from the top every time.

Tight garages and loose lag bolts

Whatever the size of the lot, a garage door gets nudged now and then by a delivery truck or a reversing car. Bumped tracks lose alignment gradually, and the first sign is a squeal rather than a crash.

Many track failures start with loose lag bolts in the jamb; tightening them in time can save the track.

How We Handle It

Step 1

Support the door

We prop the door so it can't fall, and disconnect the opener.

Step 2

Check rollers and cables

Damaged rollers or a loose cable are often the real cause of an off-track door.

Step 3

Straighten or replace the track

A twisted track is trued; a creased one is replaced and bolted to the jamb.

Step 4

Re-hang and test

The door is returned to its track and cycled until it runs without scraping.

Each figure is where a job begins, not where it ends. Most doors have two lift cables and one or two springs, and the final number moves with the door's weight, the hardware grade and how many parts have worn out. You hear it at the door before any work starts.

Garage Door Track Repair — FAQs

Can I push an off-track door back myself?
We'd rather you didn't. The door is heavy, the springs are still under load, and a forced door can crush a hand or bend the track further.
Is a dented track always replaced?
No. A light bend can be straightened and re-aligned. A crease, a split weld or a torn bolt hole means a new track.
Does rollers replacement come with track work?
Often it does, since worn rollers are a common cause. Roller sets start from $120, and the pricing page lists the other starting prices.
